The Gift of Loving Presence
One of the reasons I wanted to come on this trip was to be the hands and feet of Jesus here on earth. I truly believe that serving and loving others is part of the purpose God has given us. One moment that touched my heart happened around lunchtime. Father Shaun took me outside to meet some of the people who were waiting for the shelter doors to open. One man began sharing his story with us, and little by little, others gathered around. Before long, we were all talking, laughing, and simply enjoying each other's company. It was something so beautiful. Despite the intense summer heat and the hardships they face every day, they were smiling.
That moment reminded me that while food is certainly an important need, many of them are also longing for something just as meaningful: someone to talk to, someone to laugh with, or simply someone willing to listen. They want to be seen, valued, and treated with dignity.
It was such a simple moment, yet one I will never forget. It reminded me that sometimes the greatest act of love is simply being present for another person.
